San Francisco Parks Alliance
In 2011, after more than a year of discussions and planning, the San Francisco Parks Trust and the Neighborhood Parks Council joined forces, creating the new San Francisco Parks Alliance (SFPA). Recognizing the need to play a proactive role to ensure a more efficient non-profit sector, the Koret Foundation offered its support. For decades, Koret has recognized the critical importance that parks and open spaces play in making San Francisco an attractive place for families.
As a larger and stronger park-serving organization, SFPA has greater visibility, clout, and fundraising power. It will preserve a strong relationship with the Recreation and Parks Department and other city agencies. The result will be better-maintained parks, stronger advocacy efforts, and more community involvement in our open spaces.
One of SFPA’s current efforts has been the GearUp Fund, a fundraising effort to equip the City’s recreation centers. Koret was a leading funder toward the recent $18-million renovation of the Hamilton Recreation Center in the Western Addition, which provided seismic and access upgrades, as well as improvements to the gym, pool building, community rooms, and playground, among other features.
