PROGRAM OFFICER

PURPOSE

To facilitate the grantmaking process in the Jewish grantmaking area, including Israel. This includes researching potential opportunities for funding that fit within the Foundation’s interests and guidelines; working with potential grantees to solicit proposals; reviewing inquiries and applications for grants; writing proposals for board review; and monitoring grants after they have been awarded. Specific responsibilities include managing grants, writing post-grant evaluations, making site visits, and professionally representing the Foundation to grantees, applicants, and the Bay Area community.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As part of the professional program staff team, reviews grant requests to determine need, program feasibility, budget sufficiency, organizational capacity; conducts site visits with potential grantees, sometimes accompanied by a program assistant; and develops recommendations for approval or denial of grant requests.

Manages the elements of the grant-making procedures from the time of assignment of a letter of inquiry through the post-grant evaluation.

Prepares concise analytical written proposal summaries for the Board docket.

Represents the Foundation in the community at meetings with:

  • community representatives in the areas of the Foundation's funding interests
  • applicants seeking to learn about our process
  • other grantmakers participating in collaborative undertakings.

Develops prospective projects, working with non-profit organizations and other foundation colleagues, where applicable.

Attends regular program staff meetings and board meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategic responses to complex issues
  • Four-year college degree with post-graduate work/degree preferred
  • At least five years of experience in a decision-making capacity, preferably in the nonprofit arena
  • Knowledge/experience of the Jewish Community and Israel
  • Excellent writing skills. Ability to be concise, clear and articulate with a good command of standard English
  • Communication skills: Ability to communicate with a wide range of target audiences, including board members, grantees, program participants, and community leadership
  • Analytical skills. Ability to analyze budgets and organizational structures, knowledge of program planning and implementation, and ability to evaluate programs
  • Computer literacy: Working knowledge of Windows and MS Office applications
  • Willingness to contribute to all of the work of the Foundation
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to explain one’s decision-making process
  • Interpersonal skills: Ability to work as part of a team, as well as establish relationships with board members, staff, and community members related to the Foundation’s program
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative, as well as ability to collaborate as part of a team

 

COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

PURPOSE:

The Communications Officer is responsible for the day-to-day project execution of integrated communications efforts of the Foundation. S/he communicates all aspects of projects to the Director of Programs and Communications to ensure alignment with organizational strategy, positioning, and successful implementation.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working with the Director of Programs and Communications, CEO, Chief Financial Officer and Program Officers, manage a range of communications opportunities including print and broadcast media, direct mail, email, advertising, and web communications.

Manage all aspects of assigned projects including timelines, budgets, estimates, invoices, review and approval of projects across organization, proofreading and status reports.

Produce, maintain and/or update all public relations materials. Manage content development, design, production, and distribution of publications including but not limited to newsletters, news releases, advertisements, community reports and web content.

Cultivate and supervise graphic designers, printers, mailing houses, contractors and consultants to manage quality, costs, and timelines.

Draft and distribute press releases as needed.

Assess and recommend advertising opportunities and strategies.

Work with grantees to ensure prominent Koret acknowledgment in their collateral materials and at their events.

Manage foundation event logistics.

Manage foundation mailing lists.

Produce news clipping reports at periodic intervals.

Participate in weekly staff meetings; review grant proposal summaries.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA required, preferably in communications, journalism, or related field. Superior writing ability essential.

  • At least five years experience in marketing, communications, journalism, or public relations

  • Understanding and experience with print and broadcast media
  • Results-oriented and deadline-sensitive with a record of producing distinguished communication materials in print and web-based media on budget and on time
  • Effective communicator and listener, with superior writing, editing, and design abilities. Able to be concise, clear and articulate with a good command of Standard English.
  • Superb organizational skills; ability to juggle and prioritize multiple demands under deadline pressure
  • Self-motivated; able to work independently and to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent judgment, discretion, integrity.
  • Understanding and experience with Web 2.0 a plus
  • Skills in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Photoshop, and Macromedia Dreamweaver preferred
  • Interest in nonprofit sector desirable
  • Willingness to contribute to all aspects of the work of the Foundation

 

PROGRAM ASSISTANT

PURPOSE: 

Assist program officers with administrative and programmatic tasks with a potential emphasis in the Jewish program area.  Provide administrative support to Foundation’s Program Director in managing grantmaking programs and communications efforts.  Contribute to office-wide administrative duties for several organizations, including two private foundations and a public charity.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Grantmaking
Under the direction of a program officer:

  • reviews grant applications for completeness;
  • contacts agencies for missing or additional materials;
  • conducts basic research and inquiries related to grant requests;
  • prepares correspondence and reports relating to grant applications and active grants;
  • attends select program meetings and site visits;
  • drafts, edits, and formats proposal summaries and post-grant evaluations for the Board Book and Approval Calendar;
  • monitors grant disbursement and reporting cycles.

 

Administration
Provides primary support for Foundation’s Director of Programs and Communications.  Duties include calendaring, organization of files, and coordination of programmatic and marketing projects and consultants.

Assists with office-wide administrative duties including:

  • meeting preparation and board meeting set up;
  • administrative and programmatic tasks and projects, including telephone coverage;
  • Koret special projects;
  • management of in-house grant administration related to Koret initiatives and programs;
  • grants database updates.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Requires strong written and verbal communications skills, excellent attention to detail, basic analytical skills, and excellent organizational skills, with the ability to multitask and work independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines. Needs ability to self start and independently set priorities and balance the work load for various departments. Skills in MS Word and Excel necessary; experience with Microedge GIFTS welcomed. Must be able to maintain a professional demeanor and work well in a fast-paced organization meeting strenuous deadlines. Bachelors degree, interest/experience in Jewish community and Israel preferred.
