JOB OPENING -- PROGRAM OFFICER, JEWISH COMMUNITY

BACKGROUND ON THE KORET FOUNDATION:  Seeded with the estates of Joseph and Stephanie Koret, the San Francisco-based Koret Foundation was established in 1979 with twin focuses on the Bay Area and Israel. Specific program interests include K-12 education reform, economic expansion in Israel, and strengthening Bay Area communities. We support arts, culture, and civic institutions in our effort to advance the local economy. Our Jewish roots have inspired a new initiative on Jewish Peoplehood in coordination with funding partners. With assets of $413 million, the Foundation disburses approximately $20 million in grants each year.

Reporting to the Director of Grantmaking Programs and Communications, the Program Officer helps develop and facilitate Koret’s grantmaking process by reviewing inquiries and applications for grants in the area of Jewish Peoplehood, writing proposals for board review, monitoring and managing grants, writing post-grant evaluations, making site visits, representing Koret to grantees, applicants, and the community. The program officer works collaboratively with all Koret staff to advance and achieve foundation-wide goals.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • As part of the professional program staff team, review grant requests to determine need, program feasibility, budget sufficiency, and organizational capacity; conduct site visits with potential grantees, sometimes accompanied by program assistants; and develop recommendations for approval or denial.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Grantmaking Programs, examine, develop, implement, document, and communicate Koret’s goals, priorities, and strategies with regard to the foundation’s initiative in Jewish Peoplehood. This could include planning convenings and drafting context papers among other opportunities.
  • Identify and solicit proposals in the area of Jewish Peoplehood consistent with Koret goals, priorities, and strategies.
  • Remain abreast of current research, activities, and trends related to Jewish Peoplehood by reviewing and contributing to professional publications, and attending related conferences, meetings, and other events.
  • Manage the elements of the grant-making procedure from the time of assignment of a letter of inquiry through the post-grant evaluation, including recommendations regarding grant disbursements.
  • Prepare concise analytical written proposal summaries for the Board docket.
  • Assist in developing briefing papers and program-related reports that contribute to the Foundation’s understanding of new approaches, best practices, and program issues.
  • Provide primary program contact for the monitoring of active grants as assigned by the Director of Grantmaking Programs, including assistance with their reporting and communication.
  • Represent the Foundation in the community at meetings in areas of Koret funding interest.
  • Encourage collaboration, developing prospective projects with nonprofit and other foundation colleagues, as applicable.
  • Participate in conferences, workshops, and classes which help the program officer remain current on new developments and policies in assigned program areas of funding.
  • Participate in weekly program staff meetings and quarterly board meetings; review and provide comments, both substantive and copy edits, on all proposal summaries created by the program staff.

Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree with post-graduate work/degree preferred
  • Minimum five years of experience in a decision making capacity in the nonprofit arena
  • Experience and participation in the Bay Area Jewish community; knowledge of issues related to Israel, Israel advocacy and education.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and think strategically, set realistic goals and objectives, balance multiple priorities, process complex information and present ideas in a pragmatic and compelling manner
  • Excellent communication skills. Ability to write clearly and concisely in standard English; ability to communicate with a wide range of people, including board members, grantees, program participants, and community leadership
  • Superior analytical skills. Ability to analyze budgets, organizational structures, and leadership; knowledge of program planning and implementation and ability to evaluate programs
  • Working knowledge of Word and Excel
  • Willingness to work independently and demonstrate initiative as well as working  collaboratively and effectively with peers in joint and shared efforts
  • Excellent judgment and integrity; ability to explain one’s decision making process

JOB OPENING - GRANTS MANAGER

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Grants Manager is responsible for the smooth accurate flow of information related to the Foundation’s grant programs.  Working closely with the foundation senior staff and program staff, the Grants Manager ensures appropriate tracking of grants, develops and documents procedures, manages GIFTS data, and provides the crucial link between program, finance, and other administrative staff.  Responsible for coordination of board meeting materials.  Supervises grants associate; processes all grant checks and reports.

General Responsibilities

  • Assure compliance with IRS regulations and foundation-specific guidelines for all grants, identifying potential issues;
  • Ensure grant file structure meets legal and auditing requirements; with program assistants, coordinate creation, assembly, and maintenance of all grant files;
  • Partner with program staff to establish and maintain grant payment schedules;  coordinate all grant payments requests, track payment schedules;
  • Reconcile GIFTS database with accounting records; work with accounting staff to project payout requirements;
  • Maintain accuracy and integrity of grant tracking database structure, including integrity of grant coding;
  • Design and prepare reports to assist program staff;
  • Facilitate development of standard terms and conditions for grant awards letters, agreements, and contracts;
  • Coordinate compilation of the board book that is produced in the weeks before each board of directors’ meeting and from which the foundation’s directors make decisions regarding grants.  Coordinate with staff to accumulate all material presented to the board.  Coordinate printing of board book materials with outside vendor;
  • Train foundation staff on grants management process and software as requested;
  • Supervise grants associate;
  • Attend program staff meetings and participate in review of all grant proposal summaries.

Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree

  • Minimum two years experience in nonprofit sector

  • Knowledge of grantmaking database software, preferably GIFTS

  • Excellent command of verbal and written English

  • General office skills including experience with Word and Excel
